Innovations in Teaching
Many of the innovations I employ are based on current brain research and how adults learn. Real learning takes place when my students start talking, when they participate in the instructional process, and become active creators of their own learning experiences. I allow and encourage students to take center-stage as they discuss, question, reflect, experiment, participate, present , practice, teach, and learn from each other. My goal is to create a community of learners in which collaboration with peers rather than competition is stressed.
I have employed a variety of instructional tools to support student learning including instructional technology and field experiences.

Students learn to use iPads for classroom research, observation in the field, taking photographs, video, and anecdotal notes.
Integrating Use of iPads
Dropbox.com
Students use Dropbox.com in conjunction with the iPads to transfer pictures, video, and notes collected in the field for use in class assignments and portfolios.
Desire 2 Learn
All of my ECD courses are delivered with D2L as the platform. I employ a variety of teaching tools including PowerPoint, Kaltura, and YouTube to enhance student learning.
Field Experiences
Students participate in a broad range of field experiences to connect educational theory to classroom practice. Field experiences include observations of children, teaching practices, learning environments, implementation of lesson plans, and evaluation of curriculum.
You Tube
To illustrate Piaget's theory of preoperational thinking in ECD 102 Growth and Development, students view YouTube clips and analyze how children's thinking differs from adult's thinking.
Kaltura
I use Kaltura to give students access to video shown in class. Giving students the chance to view a video more than once strengthens their learning as they make sense of content and concepts.
Portfolio Website
With the support of TEC staff, faculty, and members of our Advisory Committee, I created my portfolio on this website. My portfolio can be used as a sample for students creating their professional portfolio.
